The best battles in British Touring Car Racing came in the era when Mini Coopers would take on Ford Galaxies. The Galaxy and its huge V8 would be untouchable on the straights, but the Minis would be all over them in the corners. It made for some of the most exciting racing you'll ever see.

We thought that sort of racing was dead. Apparently it lives on in Australia. Because of course it'd live on in Australia, a land where every animal and plant can kill you if it wants.

This particular race was a support race for the Bathurst 12 Hour a few weeks ago, and instead of a Ford Galaxy and a Mini, our contenders are a Holden Commodore and an EG Honda Civic.

For those who aren't familiar, the Mount Panorama Circuit is one of the great tracks in the world. Massive elevation change-which is expected since it's built on the side of a mountain-is combined with long straights and tight, technical portions. It looks like a hoot. And because of the layout of the circuit, it doesn't necessarily favor high horsepower over agility. Sure, the Commodore will be faster on the straights, but the Civic will make up for that difference under braking and in the twisties up and down the mountain.

It's a classic battle.

The Civic clearly has a huge advantage on the tighter corners, and while he catches up really quickly, Mount Panorama is a very tough place to pass. Not that it seems to bother the Civic driver, who chooses a corner not known for passing, barely touches the brakes, and dives for the move. It's breathtaking stuff. Take a look:
