You Have to Watch the Commerical for Pontiac's Wacky Stinger Concept Car

From Road & Track

Automakers pandering to youths who live "active" lifestyles is not a recent phenomenon. As seen here, Pontiac was doing it back in 1989 with its Stinger concept, and since then, no automaker has pandered harder or better. The company even made a promotional video for the Stinger, and well, you really should just watch it.

I found this video on the excellent King Rose Archives YouTube channel while researching something else, and it's fantastically ridiculous. It's got a large crew of attractive young people doing beach stuff, a hilariously over-the-top theme song, and of course, the Stinger in all its lime-green glory. Usually I despise this sort of youth-market targeting, but this commercial is way too absurd to hate.

The Stinger was actually a really interesting car, too. Essentially, it was a modern interpretation of an old-school beach buggy that came with all sorts of nifty tricks to complement the customer's Active Lifestyle. The body panels are made of cheap, easy-to-repair plastic, it has hydraulic suspension that can raise four inches for going off road, and it even had a picnic table and a garden hose.

It's almost a shame Pontiac never actually built this, but at least we've got the commercial fossilized in time. Go to the edge–the excitement edge!–with Pontiac.
