Yahoo Autos Watch an E55 AMG Wagon Top Out on the Autobahn
While Mercedes-AMG’s 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 is one of the most potent powertrains on sale today, it doesn’t carry the same aural sensations as the brand’s previous motors. The 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V-8 that directly preceded the turbocharged lump was a masterpiece, but it was really the 5.4-liter supercharged M113K engine that helped show the world what Affalterbach could do in the 21st century. Thanks to the AutoTopNL YouTube channel, we can now listen to a well-kept M113K-powered E55 AMG wagon storm its way to its top speed on the Autobahn.
This particular E55 AMG belongs to the W211 generation, which was offered in wagon form between 2004 and 2009. The M113K V-8 engine under the hood was rated at 469 hp and 516 lb-ft, and came mated exclusively to a five-speed automatic gearbox. The powertrain helped the wagon hit 0-60 mph in just 4.1 seconds, according to Car and Driver. Keep your foot planted for a mere 9.7 seconds and the speedometer will crest the three-digit mark. For reference, that is more than a second quicker than a similarly aged Audi RS6. The blown V-8 is so stout that it even won the International Performance Engine of the Year award back in 2003.
In spite of getting up there in age at this point, the W211 wagon has no trouble putting that power to the ground. The car rockets out of the hole with force, that old slushbox be damned. The acceleration figures don’t appear to have faltered much over the years, necessitating just 4.6 seconds to hit 60 mph from a standstill. The tantalizing sound that comes out of the back of the wagon hasn’t changed much either, harking back to a time when hybrids were mostly fashion statements. The rate at which speed piles on doesn’t change much by the time the long-roofed E55 AMG is touching 160 mph flat out.
The high-performance wagon may be having a bit of a renaissance as of late, but that doesn’t mean we should forget the segment’s former all-stars. The E55 AMG wagon may not have the excessive horsepower output we’ve become accustomed to in the 2020s, but this Autobahn run proves it is far from a slow family hauler.
