Watch Every Generation of BMW M5 Battle for Drag Race Supremacy

The BMW M5 is, without a doubt, one of the best sport sedans ever made. Every generation, from 1987 up until now, can deliver speed and smiles in a way that most other four-doors just can't. Here's how every version of the M5 stacks up against each other in a series of drag races.

The Carwow YouTube channel managed to bring stock, good-condition examples of every kind of M5 together on a closed airfield to see how they'd stack up against each other in the half-mile. There wasn't enough room to line all of the BMWs up together at once, so instead, the cars were raced two at a time, going from oldest to newest.

While the M5 has always used the same four-door, big-engine formula, power and weight have continuously increased, meaning the later cars always take the win. Our personal favorite head-to-head was the E39 versus E60 drag, simply because of the naturally aspirated V-8 and V-10 sounds.

The only race that doesn't go as expected is the E60 versus F10 drag race. The F10 manages to blow its driveshaft to pieces trying to launch, rendering it undrivable. So the host has to use the E60 race against the modern F90 M5.
