A Honda SUV in southeast Michigan smashed into a highly modified McLaren 570s while making a Michigan Left in early July. Thanks to the wonders of modern in-car cameras, we're able to watch how the accident unfolded.

According to the video description, this accident took place on July 7 at the intersection of Woodward Ave and 14 Mile Road in Birmingham, Michigan. This area is a properly wealthy suburb just outside of Detroit and is home to many of the Metro area’s high-dollar sports cars. The accident itself took place at a traffic light, directly adjacent to a busy Michigan Left. The owner of a Rivian R1T was parked along Woodward just ahead of this particular Michigan Left, which allowed the truck’s camera system to capture the incident.

The video shows oncoming traffic waiting at a light on Woodward Avenue, while the Honda enters the Michigan Left lane. These turns, specifically on Woodward, tend to have really long yellows. The driver of the Honda appears to begin to make the turn as the oncoming traffic's signal turns green. This kind of maneuver is common in Metro Detroit due to the long reds put in place near Michigan Lefts—which are put in place in an attempt to prevent these sorts of crashes. The McLaren 570s appears in the video with quite a bit of speed, which isn't shocking since the greens tend to sync on Woodward.

As the Honda makes its turn, it smashes into the McLaren's side. This sends the supercar pirouetting across the famed avenue before it ultimately comes to rest a few hundred feet down the road.

Though the Honda driver is likely at fault for the accident in the eyes of the law, Michigan’s no-fault insurance rules mean the McLaren driver won’t necessarily have an easy time of things as far as repairs are concerned. Additionally, the video description says the supercar driver had just installed a host of new parts on the car the same day as the accident. These include a stage 3 engine tune good for over 850 hp, as well as a suite of new carbon accessories.

Intersections with Michigan Lefts are used all across the state to move traffic between divided highways, where left turns are largely illegal in the state. Think of these Michigan Lefts as legal U-turns, which are always marked by stop lights or signs to control the flow of traffic. Also, this area is a common spot for drivers to open their cars up a bit more than they should, as the avenue crosses over local jurisdictions every few miles.

Take this crash as a reminder to always scan ahead when you approach an intersection, as even when you have the light, you might not have the lane.
