We turn the time machine's dial back to 1993 this week, for the opening day of Britain's RAC Rally. A Top Gear intro counts us into the rally footage (before it was a show about fat men punching producers, Top Gear beamed racing reports directly into Britons' living rooms) wherein host Steve Lee notes that the RAC Rally will witness "the world's best drivers tackle Britain's worst weather."

Brilliant.

Hark! It's Rally Go-Go!, a hit of vintage rally footage to send you flying sideways into the weekend.

It was no different in '93, with a fresh blanket of winter's first snow laid across the sprawling countryside. That didn't keep the fans away, who traveled from far and wide in the early morning to witness the rally's "spectator stages" which ran in a large loop that began and ended in Birmingham.

Fans would've been delighted to watch some all-time greats at the wheel of more all-time greats; season champion Juha Kankkunen in his Toyota, Colin McRae in a blue Subaru, François Delecour in a Ford Escort Cosworth, and young British Champion Richard Burns.

By the end of the rally, Kankkunen's dominance of the season was reaffirmed, but the ascendant McRae and his blue Subaru would return next year to win the RAC, the first time a brit had won on home soil in more than a decade.
