Watch a Model S P100D Run a World-Record 1/4 Mile Under Exceedingly Perfect Conditions

From Road & Track

Earlier this year, a Tesla Model S P90D ran a record-setting 10.804-second quarter mile. Shortly thereafter, Tesla launched an even quicker Model S, the P100D, so it was only a matter of time before the P90D's record was defeated.

Updated at 2:32 p.m. ET to reflect a clarification from DragTimes.

YouTube channel DragTimes brought two brand-new P100Ds to Palm Beach International Raceway in Florida, where one of them ran a 10.766-second quarter-mile. According to DragTimes, that makes it the quickest production four-door in the world-but that number was achieved under exceedingly perfect conditions.

How did DragTimes achieve this? Well, the car that did it was carrying as much charge in its battery as possible. DragTimes went through the trouble of bringing a massive, 150 kWh generator to plug in the cars before and after each run. With a fully charged battery, DragTimes had the best possible shot of putting down a quick time.

Is this something you could achieve yourself? Perhaps not. But just like drag racers who take every ounce of weight out of their cars and run with a nearly-empty fuel tank, DragTimes did what it had to do to get maximum performance. It's finicky, but times are times, and this is the fastest factory-stock four-door quarter-mile we've seen.

Brooks from DragTimes reached out to tell us that the best pass of the night was done on the third run without charging in between. He concludes that the Tesla doesn't need to be at full charge to achieve a sub 11-second run.
