Watch a Tesla Model S P90D Run a Record-Breaking 10-Second 1/4 Mile

From Road & Track

People seem to love taking their Teslas to the drag strip. The Ludicrous mode-equipped P90D in particular lays down some impressive times thanks to all-whee-drive grip and instant gobs of torque. Tesla owners have been trying to break the 10-second barrier for quite awhile, and it seems one Model S driver has finally done it.

The guy behind Tesla Racing Channel took his facelifted Model S P90D with Ludicrous Mode to Rockingham Drag Strip in North Carolina to set some times. He nailed several runs in the high 10s, his fastest being a 10.804. That's a new world record quarter-mile time for mass-produced electric cars.

Excellent conditions and the car's lack of panoramic sunroof and other weight-adding options likely helped this Model S break into the tens. Does this facelifted model also have some new performance upgrades? Accounts vary.

Members of the Tesla Motor Club forums are citing software upgrades in the facelifted car as the reason behind this new record. When speaking to Autoblog, however, Tesla officials said they "can't confirm any changes. Horsepower and torque ratings for Model S P90D with Ludicrous remain as stated on our website."

So, there you have it. A standard Tesla Model S P90D with Ludicrous Mode and a skilled driver cut a time faster than a Lamborghini Murcielago on the drag strip. What a world.
