Yahoo Autos Watch Toyota and Porsche LMP1 Cars Enter Hyperspace at Monza
It's hard to understand the incredible speed of modern LMP1 cars, but this video certainly helps with that. Featured here are the Porsche 919 and Toyota TS050 testing at the World Endurance Championship (WEC) Prologue at Monza.
The TS050 and 919 aren't just fast because they make around 900 horsepower each–they're fast because of their incredible aerodynamics and advanced hybrid systems. Really, these modern LMP1 machines are like F1 cars with more bodywork. In person, they're an incredible sight.
Of course, everyone is wondering which of the two cars is fastest. Toyota took the top two slots at last weekend's test in Monza, but pre-season testing doesn't necessarily indicate definitively who's the fastest. Both Porsche and Toyota could be sandbagging considerably. And besides, in endurance racing, it's not just about being the fastest. As Toyota found out t at Le Mans last year, reliability is arguably more important.
Even without Audi racing this year, the fight between Toyota and Porsche should be a good one. We'll Porsche and Toyota battle at the first WEC race of the season, the Silverstone Six Hours on April 16th.
