Rally cars are a little different from normal race cars in that they race on closed public roads. That means there's no fencing or barriers stopping wild animals from wondering onto the stages, as this video of a WRC car nearly hitting a deer will now show.

Sebastian Ogier, driver of the #01 Fiesta WRC, was barreling down one of the rain-soaked Rally Deutschland stages when he came mere feet from making contact with a fleeing deer on day one of the event. Thankfully, the deer was able to escape the car's path and dive back into the bushes.

This isn't the first time we've seen a close call with an animal on stage. In August 2016, a dog narrowly avoided disaster after it wondered onto the road and was nearly struck by an Mitsubishi Evo rally car, only to be saved by a small hump in the road.

So treat this as a reminder: There's nothing stopping an animal from scurrying onto the road and causing a crash. It's something even rally racers themselves have to keep in mind. Watch for yourself as Ogier barely avoids disaster.
