What's Going on with the Civic Type R's Three Exhaust Tips?

From Road & Track

Yesterday, we saw video of what appears to be the new Honda Civic Type R undergoing testing. And while the car didn't look all that different than what we've seen before, one thing looked strange to us-the test car's three exhaust tips.

Since the upcoming Civic Type R is expected to use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, three exhaust tips would be a pretty weird configuration. And it's likely headed to production that way, considering the last video we saw of it testing at the Nurburgring showed the exact same setup.

Now, the easiest answer is that it could be a cosmetic exhaust tip that hides two perfectly normal pipes. But even in a time when fake exhaust tips are commonplace, you'd expect a little more style out of a faux triple exhaust.

That leaves us with the possibility that the exhaust physically splits into three separate pipes, but that's far from likely. Instead, we're leaning towards the center tip being for the wastegate like the Ferrari F40. After all, why else would Honda have three exhaust tip on a four-cylinder car?

Perhaps that mystery will be solved if the Civic Type R debuts at next month's Paris Motor Show like it's expected to.
