The new Porsche 911 GT3 RS is an amazingly capable rear-drive monster, and the most extreme version of the 911 money can buy. . . if you want to stay away from turbochargers, but still need a license plate. It's quick a straight line, crazy fast around a race track, and it's got looks that'll ensure no one will confuse it with your dentist's 911.
And with the Weissach Package, the new GT3 RS costs $206,550. Porsche's favorite Aussie race-car driver, Mark Webber, and the guy who developed the car, Andreas Preuninger are here to explain why.
The devil is in the details. The list starts with the audio experience, which is heavenly. A lot of it is thanks to a lack of sound deadening-Porsche believes you should hear the gearbox, the valvetrain, and everything at work, plus the small rocks bouncing off the wheel wells. All of that is information for the driver.
The engine revs to 9000 rpm, uses a bigger crankshaft, a different valvetrain, and a new, much more efficient lubrication system that saves horsepower for your right foot. Directly-fed, cross-drilled crankshaft bearings are the jam.
The result of the engine tweaks is not just more power, but also a mountain of torque, even at part-throttle. NACA ducts cool the brakes to keep up with the pace, and with the Weissach Pack, you also get a visible carbon-fiber roof consisting of only two layers with a special clear coat, plus magnesium wheels, which save a whole lot in unsprung weight.
German engineering. And a steal compared to the 911 GT2 RS with the Weissach Package, which costs $312,250!
