Ask any knowledgable automotive enthusiast what the best single modification for a car should be to go faster. Every time, they'll say "better tires." Jason Fenske of Engineering Explained is here to show us-via some complex math-why tires make such a huge difference in performance.

For most road cars, the rubber touching the road is the only thing that gives them grip since the downforce is negligible, at best. Different tire compounds result in different grip levels, and tread designs also play a factor. In fact, as you'll see in this video, the tire you choose is more important than even your car's power.

In this demonstration, Fenske lays out a track simulation to compare a car with better tires versus a car with more horsepower. The results are unsurprising-even with double the horsepower and torque, the example car isn't able to lap the theoretical track as fast as the car with 10 percent grippier tires.

It just goes to show, tires make all the difference.
