Wild Crash Turns a V8 Supercar Into an Accordion

From Road & Track

Fabian Coulthard started Saturday's V8 Supercars Championship race at the Gold Coast 600 with his No. 12 Ford Falcon FGX measuring its normal length. By the end of Lap 96, the Falcon was about two feet shorter after a clash with rival Garth Tander on the front straight treated the Ford's nose like an accordion while ripping the rear axle and wheels from under the FGX.

"He was just weaving from side to side, I got overlap on him, and he came over on me," Tander said. "He effectively took himself out on the front of my car."

Coulthard saw things in a different light.

"It was unnecessary," he said. "It's a testament to all they've done for safety. He was into my rear bumper exiting the corner; without him hitting me and lifting me and affecting my drive, he would have never been there."
