My Worlds Are Colliding as Rumors Say Taylor Swift and Fernando Alonso Are Dating

Before yesterday, there was only one instance of Taylor Swift and the racing world colliding, when Swift's 1989 World Tour sponsored Tony Kanaan's IndyCar at the Detroit Grand Prix in 2015, an event so momentous that it made IndyCar the most popular form of motorsports on Earth. (Please don't fact check that statement.)

Yesterday evening, though, a rumor popped up: Swift and two-time F1 champion and current Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso have been dating for a week. This is a rumor with no statements by either party, no photographic evidence, and really nothing concrete to go on, but as one of Road & Track's two biggest Taylor Swift fans (the other being editor-at-large AJ Baime), we'd be remiss if we didn't keep you up to date on this breaking (rumored) news.

Here's the Tweet that made me dive down an internet rabbit hole while watching Succession last night:

Basically, Alonso and his long-term girlfriend, TV presenter Andrea Schlager, recently broke up. Swift and her boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, also recently broke up. That led to people online being suspicious about the timing of the breakups and deciding that meant the two were dating, including posting fake quotes about Swift writing songs like Style about Alonso. There's also Alonso posting a photo online with 33 in it, which would be the number of wins he'd have in F1 if he were to win another race. How is this part of it, you ask? Well, Taylor Swift is 33 years old. Coincidence? I THINK NOT.

So, are they dating? Almost definitely not. Have the rumors and jokes gotten out of control and now taken on a life of their own? Most definitely. Will Taylor be in the Aston Martin garage at an upcoming race? Who knows. That said, they may have met before. Swift had a concert during the weekend of the 2016 USGP in Austin, so maybe they talked at some point that weekend? It's possible! Just think of the nicknames: Taylonso. Swiftalo. Alonswift. Imagine the music videos. The songs, especially the breakup song. It would be amazing.
