World's First Self-Driving Trailer Doesn't Need No Stinkin' Truck

From Road & Track

Everyone seems to be talking about self-driving cars and self-driving trucks, but you know what this world really needs? A self-driving trailer.

And this brave, pallet-loaded flatbed just pushed the science forward by several decades . . . when it broke free from the truck that was pulling it.

While we can see a number of drawbacks to this particular design-including poor directional control, an apparent lack of autonomous braking capability, and the wholesale absence of a propulsion method-we nonetheless applaud this brave first step toward a future when trailers pilot themselves merrily down the freeway.

Pay no attention to the pallet truck driver parked on the shoulder, frantically trying to get his trailer back.
