  • Tom Hanks is selling four vehicles at the Bonhams’ auction at the Quail Aug. 13.

America has loved Tom Hanks since his dual-character debut as Kip/Buffy in the short-lived TV show Bosum Buddies. And our affection for him has only grown in the years since, starting with Splash opposite Daryl Hannah, with Dan Akroyd in Dragnet, as a young boy thrust into adulthood in Big, and baseball team manager Jimmy Dugan in A League of Their Own (“There’s no crying in baseball!”). From then on it was one hit after another: Sleepless in Seattle, Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, Toy Story, Saving Private Ryan, and on and on. His movies have earned over $10 billion worldwide.

Throughout it all he has been—little-known fact—an electric car enthusiast. He famously told David Letterman “I’m saving America, Dave, that’s what I’m doing, I’m saving America.” He was one of a very small handful of buyers of the AC Propulsion eBox, a Scion xB converted to run on a 35-kWh electric battery and one of the first electric cars you could buy. And he also purchased a Toyota RAV4 EV back when Toyota was selling those. He has since kept up with the electric car cavalcade, including Teslas.

Thus, Hanks’ 2015 Tesla Model S P85D is one of four vehicles that are being offered at the Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction August 13 at the Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley, California. The car has only 13,445 miles on it so there’s plenty of life left in it. It’s signed by Hanks, though Bonhams doesn’t say where. And it’s painted in British Racing Green, Hanks’ favorite color. Bonhams estimates the car will go for between $70,000 and $100,000 when the hammer falls in two weeks, which might even be a good deal considering the ridiculous prices used cars—EV and otherwise—are going for these days.

Hanks is selling a total of four vehicles at the auction. He has a 1980 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser Hardtop rebuilt by the masters at ICON 4X4 in Chatsworth, Calif. ICON swapped in a 4.3-liter General Motors L35 Vortech V6 with sequential port fuel injection good for 180 hp, along with a GM five-speed manual.

The driveline features all the highly regarded Toyota FJ functionality with four-wheel drive, Warn front hubs, power brakes and power steering, Bonhams notes. The stock-height suspension has been beefed up with Old Man Emu shocks and steering damper and it rides on chrome wheels with Toyo Open Country 31 x 10.50 R 15LT tires (including the matching spare).

The interior sports a set of power operated Porsche high back seats (the original seats are included). There are center-facing folding seats in the carpeted rear compartment. It has a roof rack and rear-mounted spare. Entertainment comes from a Sony AM-FM-cassette stereo with extra speakers in the rear. Because it’s California where even the backcountry and mountains get hot, there is air conditioning to complement the factory heater.

The car is shown with Idaho plates, suggesting that Hanks used it at his home in Ketchum. Bonhams expects it to go for between $75,000 and $125,000.
