Biggest car flops of the past 15 years

Despite their best efforts, automakers don’t always hit the mark with new vehicle introductions. Some vehicles have missed the mark more wildly than others — and these are the cars that will be remembered as the greatest flops of the past 15 years.

Ford Excursion
Bigger isn’t always better, and the Ford Excursion helps prove this point. Ford introduced this super-sized SUV in 1999 as a model year 2000 vehicle but stopped production just five years later. The Excursion was plagued by controversy from the start with environmental groups voicing concerns about the 19-foot long, 7,200-pound behemoth.

The Sierra Club actually held a nickname contest for the Excursion, and the winning name was the Ford Valdez, a nod to the Exxon Valdez oil tanker. The Excursion faced other problems including that it was too tall to fit into a standard garage and its dismal 12-mpg fuel efficiency.

General Motors EV1
General Motors’ EV1 was a car that was ahead of its time. GM brought the EV1 to market in 1996, and by 2002 more than 1,000 EV1s had been produced.  It wasn’t the vehicle itself that made the EV1 a flop, it was the actions taken by GM that led to the car’s inclusion on this list.

The EV1 was only available for lease, and despite an extremely loyal customer base, GM pulled all of the EV1s off the road in the early part of this century. Customers were willing to pay a premium price to purchase an EV1 outright, but GM refused and instead began the arduous process of destroying the majority of EV1s that it had produced.

Lincoln Blackwood
What was the leadership at Ford thinking when they decided to produce a pickup truck under the Lincoln luxury label? The truck was produced for 15 months between 2002 and 2003, one of the shortest production runs of a mass-produced vehicle, and fewer than 4,000 were sold.

There were many problems with the Blackwood — including its more than $50,000 price tag. If a consumer is going to spend $50,000 on a pickup truck, it better act like a pickup truck. Unfortunately the Blackwood was not equipped with four-wheel drive,  and the cargo bed had limited space thanks to a poorly designed cover.

One of the biggest reasons to buy a truck instead of an SUV is the storage space in the bed; if an owner can’t use this space, the vehicle is essentially worthless. This point was proven by the early demise of the Lincoln Blackwood.

Dodge Durango Hybrid
Chrysler was a day late and a dollar short when it introduced a hybrid. The company’s choice for its first hybrid models was the Dodge Durango SUV and its cousin, the Chrysler Aspen. This hybrid project was doomed to fail, even if it wasn’t entirely Chrysler’s fault.

The hybrid SUV, with a $45,000 price tag, was released just when the economy started to crash in late 2008. After a summer with record-high gas prices, a hybrid alternative to a fuel-sucking SUV sounded great. Unfortunately, Chrysler and the American public in general were not in a position to support the launch of these vehicles.

Shortly after the two vehicles became available, Chrysler halted production and eventually closed the plant used to manufacture the models.

What about the Smartcar? It's not good for much of anything but transporting one or two people. If you have to move three people, you have to make two trips. It doesn't make very good fuel economy either, when you can buy a midsize car that make the same mileage.

Toyota Echo was a POS tin box
Same for Datsuns which are all scrapped and sold back to Japan for reactor vessels in Japan
Those original Hondas were jokes and so were the original Acored with the disposal front rust fenders that maybe lasted 2 years before the top of the fender became ventilated

although they do not fall in the last 15 years, I would say those two would have to be in the catagory of the most ugly cars of the last century! I owned an ugly old pacer and yes friends called it the fishbowl among other funny little nicknames!

I have a 2000 excursion that I would not take anything for. Yes I do get around 12 MPG in town but I get 18 MPG on hwy. plus when I tow my 23' boat I have enough HP & enough room for my three buddies & I to enjoy the trip. It seems to many people want to complain how much gas I use, but lets start with our goverment officals & how much fuel they use flying all over the world & they want to preace to me . GET REAL.. I love my EXCURSION::::

Bought a used Blackwood for business travel. Absolutely love it. Yes, 13-15 mpg in town, but have gotten a high of 20-22 consistantly on the highway. Love the looks and premium accessories. There is not a pick made today with all the standard features my Blackwood has. Well over 100,000 miles and only normal maintance and wear and tear repairs. If I wear this one out, probably look for another Blackwood.

It is amusing that the Sierra Club makes fun of the Excursion, yet use the same vehicles (Excursion and Expedition) to travel about our forests.

A friend of mine worked for a Ford dealership when they came in looking for 20 of the vehicles several years ago. A little hypocritical in my opinion.

So all of the biggest failures are American? Really? They just keep bashing US manufacturing and I guess they won't stop until they have destroyed it completely with negative propaganda. The level of stupidity required to destroy your own countries' industrial base and source of wealth is of a galactic proportion. The Asians and Europeans never have a negative word to say about their own domestic companies because they understand how important they are to their economy. How is it that Americans are the only people in the world who willingly, actively and readily ruin what their predecessors have provided for them? With a few exceptions, the cars made in Asia and Europe are cheap garbage yet it’s sacrilegious to say so or point out their flaws. On the other hand it’s always open season on anything US, even if it’s all lies and self deprecation. I just don’t get it.

Been in the Ford business for 13 years and have never heard the Excursion called "the Ford Valdez". Dumb.
  • Jason C  •  1 year 0 months ago
The Ford Excursion does not really belong on this list. I owned one with a V10. It got thirteen miles per gallon whether I was pulling a heavy trailer or not. Great motor and a great car. It would go anywhere and do anything while hauling me, my wife, our, five children and two dogs. We have a 24 foot boat that is very heavy to puyll. The excursion did without breaking a sweat. Try and to that with your minivan.

Dont care what you have to say about the Ford Excursion. I have an '03 Diesel and I get around 16mpg. I love it. Plenty room for my family for trips. Plus I see more of these on the road now then I did back in 2000's. Wish Ford would bring it back.

Bashing American products seems to be in vogue for the last 20 years or so, funny how the trade deficit has grown over the past 20 years. Make sure your kids get at least a Masters so they can qulaify as night manager at McDonalds or cashier at Walmart.
If you really think American cars are so bad why do people pay hundreds of thousands at auctions like Barrett Jackson every year. I also think if you need a big vehicle to pull a trailer don't buy a Prius. I bet the Sierra Club owns big pickups too!!

Excursions is one of the best utility vehicles out there with the diesel or v10 option plus 4WD. Can tow a huge camper, boat, utility trailer. Along with the 6 kids and three dogs, luggage, and grandma.
  • Chris  •  1 year 0 months ago
The Excursion was an excellent vehicle. I had the diesel and it would do anything i wanted plus carry ALL of my family around instead of taking 2 or 3 vehicles, speaking of saving fuel. When I sold it I actually sold it over blue book because of the engine. So NO it is no where near a flop.
