Domestic Brands Dominate in New Vehicle Satisfaction Awards

Lincoln named top premium brand, though Mercedes-Benz S-Class still top car.

Long written off by much of the American public, Detroit’s Big Three automakers have been gaining sales and market share in recent months, in part due to the accolades the makers are receiving for their newest products.  So, the results of the 2011 Vehicle Satisfaction Awards will likely contribute to that momentum.

Domestic brands dominated the annual study by California-based research firm AutoPacific, Inc. which looks to find which vehicles do the best job of pleasing their owners.

The study found that two brands often described as “struggling” actually led the list: Lincoln being named the Top Premium Brand, Chrysler ranked Top Popular Brand by the motorists who participated in the Vehicle Satisfaction Awards, or VSA.

Ford Motor Co. captured seven awards overall, the most of any maker in individual product segments.  The Cadillac Escalade, meanwhile, was the overall highest-ranked light truck model in the 2011 study, though an import, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, did top the list when it came to most satisfying passenger car.

While there is usually a link between quality, reliability and customer satisfaction, AutoPacific analysts stress that other factors also come into play, such as value, design, performance and technology.  So, the imports, traditional leaders in quality-related surveys often slip in studies that go beyond “things-gone-wrong.”

Toyota, which has had a variety of problems – including quality issues – over the past several years, still managed to take four category wins, including best sporty car, with the Scion tC, and most satisfying crossover, with the Lexus RX.  Its big Avalon tied with the Ford Taurus in the large car category.

General Motors took three segment awards, the same number as fast-growing Hyundai, which collects trophies in the premium midsize and compact car segments, with the Sonata and Elantra, respectively.

Detroit automakers have been gaining ground in virtually all the various metrics used to rank the hotly competitive market, including out-of-the-box quality and longer-term reliability. But satisfaction studies are particularly revealing, industry officials note, because a customer pleased with a vehicle is more likely to buy another one – even if it does experience some service problems.
Meanwhile, the awards themselves are having an impact.

“Proof of satisfied customers is as good as gold,” says George Peterson, president of AutoPacific. “We’ve found that more than one-third of new car buyers are positively influenced by objective awards based on owner ratings when deciding on a new car or truck.”

Among premium brands, the Top Five, in order, were Lincoln, Cadillac, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar.

Chrysler was the top-ranked mainstream marque, followed by Buick, Hyundai, GMC and Dodge.

Notably, only one Japanese and one Korean manufacturer landed in either list, along with just two European nameplates.

Perhaps an equally big surprise was the fact that Hyundai’s value-oriented Genesis was chosen tops in the Aspirational Luxury Car category.

Another unexpected finding was that Lincoln’s MKZ Hybrid took honors as most satisfying hybrid car, the popular Toyota Prius only making it into the number eight position.  It’s unclear whether the recall of the Prius for brake problems, last year – or Toyota’s overall issues – might have impacted the results. Nonetheless, Prius remains the best-selling hybrid in the market.

just how maney Detroit dars are built in Detroit?? most cars I see listed as from Detroit, are built in Mexico, Canada, Japan, Korea, or anyplace not inside the USA borders, so just what makes them Detroit cars????????

      Dars?

If you know anything about the Big Three's history, you would know that they are all BASED in Detroit. Profits still go there even though some of the cars aren't. Hence you are positively contributing to the US GDP when you buy a Ford, GM, Chrysler...
    • KC3sTT 1 year 0 months ago
Yes Michael, you help GDP, but GDP isn't wages. The only people seeing those profits are CEOs, Directors, and shareholders. I would rather buy a Nissan that was manufactured in a US factory and paid the wages of non-union US workers than buy a GM that was assembled in Mexico factory. It is factories like that which caus US job losses when they open and facilitated the shutdown of a States-side factory. Foreign companies want to avoid import taxes, so they bring their jobs here, domestic companies want cheap labor, so they send their jobs out of the country. Buy American-made, not American-named. That said, there are some domestic models still built in the US and I do support those.

There are some serious flaws in the "categories" listed here. For example, the Scion TC is not a sporty car in any car magazine's estimation...it simply "looks" like one. Also, if the Lexus RX is in the "Luxury Crossover" category, how can the same vehicle with a hybrid powertrain a "hybrid truck"? It is NOT a truck. It has the same underpinnings as a V6 Toyota Camry, with AWD...making it an SUV you cannot take offroad.

I've given up trying to understand car "experts." I read an article in Motor Trend the other day that compared the new Ford Focus to an Aston Martin. I think I should give up college and just start writing whatever I happen to vomit.

sporty cars were a separate category from sports cars. As an owner of the new style 11 tc, I can tell that it goes plenty fast enough for its price. And I read in an auto magazine that is just a few 10ths of a second slower than a new base camaro 0-60
    • Mike Z 1 year 0 months ago
Derek: What mag did you read that states a '11 Scion TC is "a few tenths slower to 60 than a base Camaro"? The difference is two full seconds. You Scion/Toyota fanboys are dreamers. I had some guy in a brand new silver TC wanting to race me one morning to work (I own a '09 135i). I said "No thanks. Go find something in your league like an Eclipse or Focus."

Just 2 weeks ago you guys had an article saying Escalades were one of the worst SUV's. SO which is it??
    • Jaime 1 year 0 months ago
      BINGO
    • Tony 1 year 0 months ago
You need to read the articles more closely, not just look at the pictures, this isn't Playboy. If you read the article about the Escalade a few weeks ago, ratings were based largely on cost of ownership and several vehicles made the list just because of initial cost and scheduled maintainance costs. Not a GM man myself, just remember the article.
    • Ambergirl 1 year 0 months ago
You are exactly right Kgsharber! Two weeks ago Escalades were on the list for the worst SUV and not too long before that, it made the list for most overpriced cars.
Sounds like Tony is defending an Escalade purchase to me. IMO, you are simply paying for the Cadillac emblem.
  • the real  •  1 year 0 months ago
Buy used. every car on this list is going to depreciate 47% before you finish paying for it.
    • Kyle Sommers 1 year 0 months ago
Thats why you lease cars...don't have that problem them
    • KC3sTT 1 year 0 months ago
Leasing a car is pretty much long-term rental. In the end, you don't keep the car, so you have paid for it and get nothing to show for it. If you buy new and it loses 50% of its value by the time it is paid off, you still don't have a payment and you can sell it if you want.
    • Kyle Sommers 1 year 0 months ago
ok you can do a 2-5 year lease...and once the lease is up you get another BRAND NEW car.
  • Bucki  •  1 year 0 months ago
Paul A. Eisenstein got an "F" in basic math. 15 of the cars in this list are foreign brands. 11 are domestic. Since when 11 is greater than 15? 11 to 15 is hardly a "dominating score.

      You noticed that too.

I guess you dont know anything about the different brackets on these lists. This is not the full list you idiot. This list is just there to show the basic categories of what they graded. So I am giving you an "F" for being just plain retarded.

Someday I will buy a new car, but until then, I will pretend my old neon is an aston martin, and still look down on "the little people"

I just bought a 2011 Ford Mustang GT and I am blown away by the fit and finish, styling, and most of all performance. It is just fun to drive. HP, handling, braking, and yes fuel ecomomy...26 mpg with 412 HP!!! Not voodoo magic...AMERICAN engineering. The Sync and nav system are as good or better then aftermarket (I have a Pioneer AVIS and kenwood touch nav system in other cars). I like to read the manuals and was amazed by the amount of high tech in the Fords. It comes with two kinds of stability control (adjustable for more agresssive driving-track), traction control, two kinds of security, and ABS. Ford is leaving the foreign market in the dust.
  • bill  •  1 year 0 months ago
Really? Does anyone think the Scion tC or the Porsche 911 is more popular than the new Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers. Think someone got paid off for this list.
  • G. Pavel  •  1 year 0 months ago
Popular does not mean good, I agree with Danny Cat.
  • Jeremiah B  •  1 year 0 months ago
It's so strange. Whenever I see any article on Yahoo talking about cars or trucks- "The Best of" or "The Worst of"- I NEVER see Nissan. It's almost as if they are forgotten altogether. I guess if they have "The Most Mediocre" cars in the world. Nissan would be the only contender? I like them and it's too bad they are widely forgotten.

I remember when the Chevy Lumina was given the Good Housekeeping "best buy" rating. Same song, different verse.
  • Bob  •  1 year 0 months ago
Just bought a Ford (Flex) for the first time and absolutely love it iside and out. The technology (Sync) is amazing. I would have never bought a Ford 2-3 years ago. They really stepped up to the plate. My other car is a Mercedes E350 and I have to admit that the boxey looking Flex has it beat in many ways. American auto makers are finally starting to figure it out.

  • DANIEL  •  1 year 0 months ago
my buddy "Big Yank" just drove his new ford f150 to florida from alabama about 400 miles and only averaged 11 mpg while towing a small trailer with two harleys on it. that sucks in more ways than one. a few years back I had towed a ford crown victoria on a trailer 200 miles with my dodge 1500 and got 18 plus mpg. what i'm saying is where the hell is the eco in fords eco-boost?
