Report: Which cars cost least to repair?

Toyota has topped the list, with the Toyota Corolla being the least expensive to repair.Toyota has topped the list, with the Toyota Corolla being the least expensive to repair.

Despite its continuing recall woes, Toyota has taken the top spot in a ranking of cars by repair cost. The report, released Monday, shows which companies' cars have both the fewest and the least expensive repairs. Hyundai, whose U.S. sales have surged this year, finished second in the rankings, published by auto diagnostic and repair website CarMD, which collects repair data from its network of 3,000 U.S. mechanics. Rounding out the top 5 were Honda, Ford and General Motors -- followed by Mitsubishi, Nissan, Kia, Volkswagen and Chrysler.
The report covers a wide range of model years, from 2001 to 2011, but focuses on repairs made only in the most recent year ending Oct. 1. While ranking individual car models, the CarMD Vehicle Health Index also grades manufacturers on a combination of all their brands. For example, the Toyota ranking includes Lexus and Scion cars, while General Motors includes Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac and GMC.

Based on data from mechanics, the CarMD report differs from car-owner surveys, such as the Consumer Reports reliability survey. The CarMD index ranks individual car models as well as manufacturers, combining both frequency of repairs and repair cost for an overall rating.

The top-ranked model, the 2009 Toyota Corolla, had not only infrequent trips to the shop but an average repair cost of just $45.84. (Repairs picked up by this system cover everything with a check-engine light sensor, including engine, transmission and pollution control devices. Only items like belts and tires are not included.)

Here are some other findings  from the CarMD study:
  • Luxury brands generally fared worse because of repair frequency, not high costs. Lexus, for instance, rated more poorly than corporate stablemate Toyota. This conflicts with high owner ratings for Lexus in surveys like that from J.D. Power and Associates. The Mercedes-Benz parent company and BMW ranked below the top 10 in this report, though CarMD did not give ranking details beyond the top 10.
  • Hyundai has made great strides in low repair frequency. The company originally launched its 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty to reassure potential buyers. But Hyundai's rating was boosted by strong performances from recent models of the Elantra and the 2011 Sonata, which ranked sixth among all models.
  • Ford got an especially strong performance from its Edge crossover SUV, which had three different model years ranked among the top 100 vehicles. But Ford's Windstar minivan, discontinued in 2003 but still going to repair shops, hurt its ranking.
  • Among General Motors brands, Buick was a standout. If Buick had been ranked individually instead of wrapped into GM, it would have topped the list. Its Lucerne model had three different years in the top 100 cars.
As part of its Vehicle Health Index package, CarMD also cites which repair problems occur most frequently for individual car brands. If you want to check your car, go to this CarMD page and put in the make and year.

CarMD is a service aimed at letting car owners know what is wrong with their car and what it should cost to fix the problem. Its $119 CarMD device plugs into the diagnostic system on your car to discover the problem; users can then feed that data into their website to identify the problem and the likely repair cost, based on data the company collects regularly from mechanics at both dealer service departments and independent shops. Its database since 1996 includes about 500,000 repair reports.

good thing I purchased a corolla 2011, I could say it's the best choice for people like me who dont have enough money to buy those luxurious piece of crap cars out there boasting about design and interior quality., lets check our cars and compare it ten years from now ( if yours are still running by that time )

I've been an auto and truck mechanic for 17 years now and I can tell you the only thing you can get these days for $40 is an oil change. The average shop rate is well over $80 per hour, the lowest diagnostic time is at least a half hour, this doesn't include part price or installation.

I need you to come to Illinois and be my mechanic then. I'd turn all my cars over to you for repairs!!!

What? $80 an hour? Where? In San Jose, CA an independent
small mom and pop repair shop charge $120/hr. I have no idea what dealers charge, but it's probably more than $120/hr.

Labor cost in Texas is more than $100/hr average. That $80/hr usually average to repair motorcycle here!!! Omg, wish i could fix my own bikes. WTF!!

The real question is how often do certain car brands NEED to be repaired?

Most of it is how you take care of them. I have two trouble free Fords and one Dodge

something was always going wrong with my Mini-Cooper.

instead of Mini-Cooper, it should have been named Money-Pit.

I had four Corollas and drove 42k miles a year. In 15 years, I needed one relay switch. Otherwise, just oil changes and tires. They are bulletproof cars.

Volkswagen cheap to repair. You have got to be kidding. My Beetle cost an arm and a leg or maybe my dealer was a ripoff artist.

no, you are right. vw's are very expensive. i knew a guy who got his driver side rear view mirror fixed and it cost like 800.00 bucks. just ridiculous!

VW's are not that expensive to repair if you know what your doing. otherwise, take it to an independent shop if you can find a reputable one near. That mirror fix would have probably costed a third of what you paid at the dealer.

Why the h3ll can't Mercedes make reliable cars. Their ads always taut German engineering. What does that really mean? If you look at reliability reports on MSN, Edmunds, CR, etc.... owners main complaints are electrical followed by the infamous MAF sensor, then suspension. Also, recent engines such as in the C300/350, E350/500 have serious issues to the point that there is a class action against them. For what they want for their cars, you'd think they would at least be problem-free. The type of maintenance and issues that results in owning a Mercedes is not what to expect with car-ownership. What a shame.

Years ago I worked as an auto damage adjuster for an insurance company. It always pissed me off that Mercedes put the expensive electrical equipment around the front of the car where it would be smashed in every accident. Plus their markup on parts is over 300 percent.

Mercedes has seriously slipped in quality. They are an upkeep nightmare - they are for rich people who dump them after 2 years.
    • Syaieya 6 months ago
If we're going to be serious here, Mercedes have always had issues with the electrical systems. Even back when they were over engineered and indestructible the biggest issues were electrics. But no Mercedes has ever been without it's maintenance schedule. If you treat them like the little princesses they are most of them will be good for years, but if you slack off even once it can mean the car will sour just that quick. That being said, they're getting better. It was dark times between 2001 and 2006 but they are picking back up.

The other night, my Chrysler Sebring(SKYE) the engine light symbol came on, and I took her into Auto Zone, and they ran a free diagnostics test which they have for customers and gave the code and possibilities of problems, I was told to start with gas cap, so on Sunday, as I was parking for breakfast my dash showed GASCAP all of a sudden, So I went and bought one for just over $10 plus tax, put the new gas cap on hoping engine light would go off and it didn't....Today, wow!! after I got out of work and started the SKYE, and started driving I looked at the dash and damn the engine light symbol was off, FIXED!!!! YEA!!!! I was so happy :)

I stopped reading once it said Volkswagen was one of the cheapest to repair that is complete B.S as a Volkswagen owner. This car takes more money out of my pocket then any other car i ever owned if you are a Volkswagen owner you probably feel my pain as well.

Volkswagen is a schizphrenic product line. Passat is made in Germany and holds up well. Same for the recent Tiguan. But drive a 2000's Jetta, and you have a car assembled in Mexico and filled with defective and substandard parts sourced from outside suppliers in Mexico; Brazilian transmissions, etc. Window motors, switches, chipped components, transmissions, regulating A/C, idle, etc. etc. replacements will bankrupt the average white collar salaried guy. Then there's the Touareg-- made in some place called Estonia! Huge repurchase rate under the lemon laws, and if you buy one used at 50,000 to 60,000 miles, better have a good line of credit for repairs.

The thing is, no one knows how to maintain a car anymore. They drive it like a race car and don't change the oil. What do you think is going to happen? Doing basic maintenance and the small repairs are easy. Just have to be willing to learn.
  • Matthew  •  6 months ago
So pay $40 to buy the service, then pay over $60 for the equipment. Then take the car to your mechanic to do everything again for another $60+ and the work. CARMD is a rip off and whoever purchases this crap is a DOPE.

I have been a automotive tech for over 20 years. I can't even understand how VW is even considered a automobile. has to be the biggest pile of s$#t i have ever had to fix. VW + AUDI = JUNK

Considering what it cost me to have the dealer work on my Jeep, I'm surprised Chrysler was even able to make the list.

my Dad taught me how to fix things on my car, and I'll teach my son the same .. not only does this save you money, but that was some of the best quality time my (late) Dad and I ever had

DO not believe Honda is cheap to repair or maintain. I just took my 09 Civic and it cost me over 300 bucks! My 1st mistake was taking it to the dealer , rather than my regular mechanic. No more dealership service for me.

Luxury women are much more expensive to maintain than luxury cars.
  • mal  •  6 months ago
Where did they get this convoluted information? I just paid $475 for two sensors on my '03 toyota with 55k miles to get the check engine light out. Toyota wanted $750.
  • John  •  6 months ago
Go to dealers and you will pay three times the cost! I took my Honda to a gas station and they put a new water pump, new belts, new plugs, and a timing belt for $700.00! The dealer wanted $1,400 just for the timing belt! I told them to kiss my white butt!

For the most part, it pays to learn how to repair your own car, if you have the time and the patience. I'm surprised at how many people don't even know how to change their oil, or worse, a flat tire. Seriously?!? You would rather wait on the side of the road for 2 hours waiting on a tow truck when your vehicle comes with all the equipment and instructions to change that tire. IDK, maybe I'm so fanatical because I'm a car guy...
