Some have the perception anyone driving a BMW must be made of money, but a police chase in Connecticut where a BMW driver threw $52,000 in cash out the window is helping fuel the stereotype.

Hellcat driver ejects from his muscle car at 160 mph while running from police.

There’s a reason the BMW driver was running from the fuzz and it’s connected to the cash, so it all makes sense. WTNH says two suspects entered a service station off Interstate 395 North and tampered with an ATM, withdrawing an unspecified quantity of cash.

When troopers were called to the scene, two suspects took off in a black BMW crossover and a chase ensued. During the pursuit the driver threw several items out of the vehicle, including a backpack with $52,000 in $20 bills. He also hucked an iPhone and mobile hotspot we bet were used to hack the ATM.

Thanks to pursuit policies in Connecticut, troopers called off the chase. We’re guessing the ATM robber didn’t realize all the had to do was drive fast and crazy to not get caught, so he could’ve kept the cash and devices after all.

We know many think restrictive pursuit policies are always good. We’re not saying there shouldn’t be any restrictions. But sometimes the restrictions seem to reward criminals for behaving recklessly while fleeing, which would then encourage them to do that consistently so they can get away.

Some enforcement agencies and governments, including the entire state of Washington, have rolled back some restrictions on police chases because there’s been a question of their being too much.

We don’t know all the details of this pursuit, to be clear, so we can’t weigh in on whether or not calling it off was a good idea. But it seems evident the suspect could’ve kept the cash had he known it was going to be terminated and that’s an interesting detail.
