The Fiat 500 is back, and this time, it's an electric-only affair, thus the subtle name change to 500e. With a dash of power, a solid list of standard equipment, and a range sufficient for the average urban cowpoke, this city car is an affordable, approachable EV.
The Fiat 500e is a city car through and through, evidenced by its tidy size and modest range.
Motive force comes from a single electric motor on the front axle, producing 117 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque.
The Fiat 500e is claimed to be the most lightweight EV on the market, at a manufacturer-estimated 2952 pounds.
Fiat says 60 mph will arrive in 8.5 seconds, and the car tops out at 94 mph.
Under the body is a lithium-ion battery with an estimated 37 kWh of usable capacity. That should be good for an EPA range of 140 to 150 miles.
With an 11.0-kW onboard charger, hooking up via a Level 2 AC plug will charge the battery from empty to full in under 4.5 hours, according to Fiat.
If you're in a hurry, the 500e will accept DC fast-charging up to 85 kW, which is Fiat says is enough to boost the battery from empty to 80 percent in 35 minutes.
The 500e is also quite an affordable machine, with a starting price of $34,095.
If you have generally secure access to charging, don't take long road trips, and aren't interested in winning any drag races, the 2024 Fiat 500e makes for affordable, approachable urban transportation.
