  • The 2025 Ford Maverick has been spotted completely undisguised, showing off a revised front end.

  • This also appears to be a sporty version of the tiny truck, with a blacked-out grille and sizable lower air intake.

  • The real highlight are the black wheels, which feature a “turbofan” design.

Ford revived the compact truck segment in 2022 when it brought back the Maverick nameplate on a tiny pickup offering hybrid power. Now Ford looks set to refresh its popular hauler for 2025. It also appears the long-rumored performance variant, which may be called the Lobo, is coming too, with spy photos showing a kitted-out Maverick with a sporty design driving completely undisguised.

The most noticeable change on this Maverick prototype, which we expect will proliferate throughout the truck’s lineup, are a new set of headlights. The design abandons the C-shaped style that wrapped around a horizontal grille trim piece that encapsulated the turn signal, and the headlights now turn down sharply in a hooked L shape.

This prototype appears to be a sportier version of the Maverick and features a more assertive look with a blacked-out grille with a series of vertical slats. The grille also bears the updated Ford logo, which first debuted on the Maverick’s big brother, the F-150. The front bumper houses a wide air intake and fog lamps that sit under a trim piece spanning the width of the truck. A radar sensor seems to sit in the lower grille, portending upgraded driver-assistance technology.

Unlike previous Mavericks, this truck has a body-colored front bumper, side sills, bed rails, and rear bumper, although this may be exclusive to this sporty variant. The roof is also painted black. The most eye-catching element, however, are the new wheels. Finished in black, the 19-inch aerodisc design recalls the OZ Racing rollers found on classic Ford rally specials like the Escort RS Cosworth. Ford first hinted at these “turbofan” wheels at the SEMA show in 2021 with a modified Maverick created by Tucci Hot Rods.

It’s still unclear what the sporty Maverick will be called, with the ST badge being an obvious choice as well as the Lobo name that Ford trademarked last year. It’s interesting to note, however, that this prototype displayed a Lariat badge on the front fender, so the sporty model could instead be a package offered across the Maverick lineup, like the Tremor off-road pack which is available on the Lariat and XLT trims.

Hopefully, this flashy-looking Maverick will still bring upgraded performance. The current hybrid makes do with 191 horsepower, while a turbocharged four-cylinder is also offered with 250 ponies that dashes to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. A manual transmission would be the icing on the cake, but we aren’t holding our breath. We expect the refreshed Maverick to debut later this year.
