The debut of the 2025 Toyota 4Runner is finally upon us, rounding out the automaker’s reworked 4x4 lineup. The fan-favorite SUV will come to the market with nine trim levels to choose from, including a new overlanding-focused Trailhunter model. Here’s everything you need to know about the most hardcore crawler to ever wear the 4Runner nameplate.

2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter Power and Platform

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is based on the brand’s TNGA-F Platform, which the SUV shares with the Tundra, Tacoma, Sequoia, and Land Cruiser, as well as the Lexus GX 550 and LX 600. Considering the capability on offer from those machines, the 4Runner appears to be in good company. The SUV most closely mirrors the Tacoma, forgoing the turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 found in the upmarket offerings. Instead, every 4Runner will now come equipped with a turbocharged 2.4-liter i-Force four-cylinder. In standard spec, the engine is good for 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. That said, higher-trimmed models like the Trailhunter receive the i-Force Max Hybrid powertrain, which adds a 48-hp electric motor inside the 8-speed gearbox. The system provides output ratings of 326 hp and 465 lb-ft, making this the most powerful 4Runner yet. A 1.87-kWh battery pack keeps the hybrid system topped up.

2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter Off-Road Hardware

The Trailhuter is also bolstered by a suite of off-road hardware, with Toyota looking to well-respected names in the 4x4 space for help. ARB supplies a set of Old Man Emu 2.5-inch forged shocks, complete with external piggyback reservoirs in the rear. Toyota pairs the shocks with a set of 33-inch Toyo Open Country A/T tires, lifting the SUV by two inches up front and one and a half inches in the rear when compared to lesser trims. Toyota and ARB also co-developed a new roof-rack setup for the truck, which should help with its gear-hauling needs. A two-speed transfer case provides 4x4 capabilities, while an electronic locking rear differential ensures ample traction on the trails. Other features include steel underbody skid plates, rock rails, a high-mount intake, and a built-in 2400-watt inverter. The overlanding-focused model also packs some unique visual tweaks, including a heritage-style grille with bronze lettering, and a set of Rigid LED fog lamps.

2025 Toyota 4Runner Trailhunter Pricing

Toyota hasn’t shared pricing information for the 2025 4Runner lineup quite yet, nor has it dropped pricing for the previously announced Tacoma Trailhunter model. That said, we wouldn’t be surprised to see prices approaching the $60,000 mark. For reference, the GX 550 starts at $64,250 in base spec. We shouldn’t have to wait too much longer for pricing details, with Toyota planning to start offering the i-Force Max powertrain in the Tacoma later this year. Once that Trailhunter model hits showrooms, we’ll know exactly how this new Toyota 4x4 hierarchy actually shakes out
