  • Volkswagen is delaying the launch of the electric ID.7 sedan in the United States.

  • The automaker did not specify when the ID.7, originally due for the 2025 model year, would go on sale.

  • The electric ID.Buzz minivan is still arriving this year, with Volkswagen now saying it will hit dealerships in the fourth quarter.

Volkswagen announced this morning that it is delaying the launch of the electric ID.7 sedan in the U.S. and Canada. The electric sedan was originally due to go on sale in America this year, likely in the third quarter, after hitting the streets of Europe last year. Volkswagen didn’t specifically name why the ID.7 would be pushed back, but said the decision came “as market dynamics continue to change.”

VW also pointed out that demand for the ID.7 is high in Europe, particularly after the debut of the ID.7 Tourer wagon, and that sales for the brand in North America were up by nearly 28 percent in the first quarter. But despite significant upgrades for 2024, VW’s only electric model—the ID.4 crossover —was down by 37 percent year-over-year in the U.S. in the same span.

No updated timeline was offered for when the ID.7 will become available on our shores, so who knows how long it could be. The electric sedan was expected to start around $50,000 and packs a single rear-mounted 282-hp motor, with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain expected later. The 77.0-kWh battery should eke out roughly 300 miles of range.

In the meantime, Volkswagen is still committed to bringing the ID.Buzz minivan, which has been on sale in Europe since 2022, to the U.S. in the fourth quarter, itself delayed from the initially promised summer 2024 launch.
