Yahoo Autos At $25,000, Is This 2015 BMW 328d A Super Deal?
The first thing people will notice about today’s Nice Price or No Dice 328d is the big nostril F80 M3 nose it adopted after the old one went one too many rounds. Let’s see if that rhinoplasty and a slew of less obvious updates and improvements can match the car’s asking.
While I wouldn’t call the vote on yesterday’s 1984 Mazda RX-7 GSL-SE a squeaker, it did seem in the comments that a lot of you were pained not to give the classic rotary sports car a win. As nice as it seemed—save for the egregiously large wheel and tire combo it wore—the $10,000 asking price was just too high. The result was a narrow 54 percent No Dice loss.
Owing to its age and unique nature, yesterday’s Mazda arguably is a bona fide classic. You can look around today and find cars that, while not quite there yet, are on the same trajectory. I’d say any of BMW’s Touring models could easily fit the bill.
This 2015 BMW 328d xDrive has a lot going on. The seller describes the model as the “Superman Edition” owing to its Estoril Blue over red upholstered interior. The drivetrain is not quite as superheroic but notable for being a diesel in an era when that’s literally a dirty word in the automotive community. That engine is a 2.0-liter edition of the N47 turbo-diesel inline-four that, in this car, made 181 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque from the factory.
Interestingly, this one has had some massaging since its debut at Dingolfing. The work includes what the seller says is a Stage 3 tune, paired with an EGR delete, and larger downpipe and intercooler. That means it should make more. According to the seller, it’s been well-maintained too. The timing chain and guides were refreshed 15K ago, and all the usual suspects—water pump, cam cover gasket, etc.—have been addressed.
More work has been undertaken on the suspension, with new control arms having been fitted, along with Bilstein shocks and struts and Eibach springs. New brake rotors and pads have also been installed, and the Style 397 alloys wear fresh rubber, completing the picture.
It’s a pretty nice picture, too. The Superman color scheme may not sound right, but overall, it looks excellent in the pictures. The aesthetics have had a good bit of massaging to go along with the mechanicals. The nose is aftermarket and modeled after the later G80 M3, featuring that car’s exaggerated twin kidneys between the F30 headlamps. It’s been color-matched and gives the wagon quite a unique appearance.
The cabin has M3 carbon fiber trim, which, along with the sport buckets (in red!) and fat three-spoke wheel, lend the space a business-like appearance. It all looks to be in fine shape, with just some wear on the driver’s seat outside bolster to note. The car has all the expected options—nav, auto climate, etc.—so it should prove very livable as well.
According to the ad, the car has a clean title and just 124,000 miles on the clock. The seller claims that it “needs nothing I have meticulously taken care of it since I wasn’t planning on getting rid of but my interests have changed.” They boast that the “Car runs super smooth and sounds amazing.” The asking price is $25,000, OBO.
