Local Highlights: Kilgore sets soph scoring mark but Streaks fall; Galva girls grab win

Streaks fall to Rocky

ROCK ISLAND — The Galesburg High School girls basketball team suffered a 50-42 loss to Rock Island on Thursday night in Western Big 6 Conference play.

Kiarra Kilgore had 21 points to lead the way for the Silver Streaks (19-10, 6-6). Kilgore now holds the GHS record for most points scored in a season by a sophomore with 534 points. Megan (Pacheco) Szalo (522 points) previously held the mark and set it in the 1997-98 season.

Juniper Schwartzman and Abby Lingafelter chipped in six points each for the Streaks in the defeat.

Sophomores grab victory

ROCK ISLAND — The Galesburg High School sophomore girls basketball team handed Rock Island a 51-32 defeat on Thursday evening.

Addysen McLaughlin finished with 20 points to lead the Silver Streaks. Syriah Boyd chipped in 14 points, and Addison Peck added 10 points for GHS.

GALESBURG BOWLING

Streaks wrap up regular season

STERLING — The Galesburg High School bowling team wrapped up its regular season Thursday night with a win over Sterling.

The Silver Streaks (8-1) finished with 2,791 points while the Golden Warriors had 2,581.

Chloe Day had a 621 three game high series for Galesburg. Ellee Shinn and Day tied for high single game with a 212. Day finished with a 578 three game series.

Faith Davis (433), Allisa Schultz (408), Ashley Yoder (377), and Iris Brechbuhler also repped the Streaks on the lanes.

AREA GIRLS BASKETBALL

Titans fall to Tigers

MONMOUTH — The Monmouth-Roseville High School girls basketball team suffer a 60-45 loss to Sherrard on Thursday night at “The Shoebox.”

Carmyn Huston led the Titans with 24 points. Mattie Gillen chipped in 10 points for M-R (20-7).

Ridgewood taken by Annawan

WOODHULL — The Ridgewood girls basketball team fell to Annawan 59-43 on Thursday evening.

The Spartans (16-9) held a 26-25 lead over the Bravettes at the half.

Paige Leander had 13 points to lead Ridgewood, and she grabbed 13 rebounds. The Spartans’ Hallica Warren-Anderson also had a double-double, as she netted 11 points and had 10 rebounds.

Wildcats tame Cougars

ONEIDA — The Galva High School girls basketball team downed ROWVA/Williamsfield 51-36 on Thursday night.

Jenna Woodside led the Cougars with nine points.

Kali Yelm had a game-high 16 points for the Wildcats. Ava Strom pitched in 11 points, and Lexi Stone finished with 10 points for Galva.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Price scores 15 for Sandburg in loss

GALESBURG — Atem Agot collected his sixth double-double of the season and Eric Price nearly matched his season-high in scoring, but Kishwaukee was able to hold off the Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team 75-62 on Thursday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

The Chargers (13-9, 2-3) trailed by as many as 12 points in the first half but closed to with 40-36 early in the second half after a 13-4 stretch.

Sandburg pulled within 54-52 midway through the second half thanks to a 9-2 spurt that was capped by a Griffin Ronnebeck 3-pointer off a feed from Adam Cash. Kishwaukee, though, answered by scoring 13 of the next 16 to extend its last back to 67-55.

Price scored a team-leading 15 points for the Chargers on 7-of-11 shooting. The freshman also grabbed seven rebounds, collected three steals and had a block and an assist. He finished a point away from tying his season-high of 16 points Dec. 8 against Lincoln Land.

Agot chipped in 14 points and had a team-best 11 rebounds (eight offensive) for Sandburg.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Chargers upended by Kougars

GALESBURG — Despite a career-best night from Natalie Righi, the Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team dropped a 77-57 Arrowhead Conference decision to Kishwaukee on Thursday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

The Chargers (2-15-0-4) trailed 14-10 in the first quarter after a Righi layup, but Kishwaukee ran off 12 straight points to end the period and open the second.

A 14-0 run in the third that was kickstarted by four straight 3-pointers helped the Kougars extend their lead to 57-29.

Righi was a force for the Chargers all night, leading Sandburg in scoring and rebounding with career-highs of 22 points and 13 boards for her first career double-double.

Seven of Righi’s rebounds came on the offensive glass. She finished 6 of 14 from the field and knocked down 10 of her 12 free-throw attempts. Righi blew past her previous high in scoring (12 on Dec. 18 against Prairie State), and she surpassed her season-best 12 rebounds from Nov. 20 at Madison.
