BMW is gearing up to show off a new convertible concept at the 2024 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. Dubbed Skytop, this V8-powered convertible draws some inspiration from legendary BMW predecessors while still pointing toward the future.

Powering this BMW concept is a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. While other powertrain and driveline details are held in a BMW filing cabinet, the company did say this 4.4-liter V8 makes 617 hp. If this were to ever see production, it would likely be mated to an eight-speed automatic.

Of course, as a concept car, the Skytop probably won’t spend too much time on the road. However, it will spend plenty of time being stared at while it sits on a stand. With that in mind, the design team at BMW labored over this convertible concept and turned out what can be seen as a modern love letter to the BMW Z8.

Just looking at the rear of the Skytop will show the clear inspiration from the Z8. Thin rear tail lamps are strikingly similar those on the Z8. Front styling bucks the current BMW trend and features small a kidney bean grille set in a shark nose.

As tends to be the case with concept cars, the interior is as opulent as nearly any cabin on the show floor. Leather wraps just about every surface in the cabin, including the rear sport bar and the removable top panels. The top panels can be securely stowed away in the trunk area when you want the open-air experience.

Obviously, the BMW Skytop is a one-of-one show car, and it’s probably not going into production—at least, not anytime soon. However, there’s always a chance for wild concepts like this to see the inside of a factory if there are enough fans willing to spend the money.

Even if it doesn’t see production, you will be able to take a look at this wild BMW concept at this year’s Villa d’Este.
