Chevrolet El Camino—Buick GNX Mashup Is Today's Bring a Trailer Find
An '86 Chevrolet El Camino
and an '87 Buick Regal
drive into a shop...
And out comes this custom-bodied mashup. It's based on a 1986 El Camino, but it's been reworked to incorporate the body and interior of an '87 Buick Regal. Complementing the black bodywork, the Regal bits have GNX details, even though the stock Chevy 305-cubic-inch V-8, rather than a Buick turbo V-6, sits under the hood.
It's a slick-looking build, and it's up for auction right now on Bring a Trailer (which, like Car and Driver, is part of Hearst Autos). The squared-off styling of the Buick Regal integrates amazingly well with the pickup-bed El Camino. This isn't just a front clip bolted on. The Regal rear quarter-windows have been incorporated, and the use of the Buick rear panel as a tailgate is perfect. The 16-inch GNX-style crosslace wheels are some of the best-looking factory wheels of the period and finish things off nicely.
It's also impressive that the transformation extends to the interior. Although given the shared nature of the interior components in GM's 1980 rear-wheel-drive platform models, that was probably the easiest part of the build.
The 305-cu-in V-8 is paired with a four-speed automatic and sports a rebuilt carb and a K&N air filter. A turbocharged 3.8-liter V-6 would be a worthwhile upgrade that would bolster the GNX half of the equation, or you could go with a more potent modern mill. Or just drive it as is and blow onlookers' minds.
The auction for this ultra-'80s mashup ends on May 20.
