The Commentary Got Weird Late Into The Night At Le Mans

Racing through the middle of the night in an endurance event always brings out the weird stuff. Last weekend at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the racing was put on pause for several hours because of a lengthy period of rainy weather. While the cars trundled around behind the safety cars (which had to stop to re-fuel after a couple of hours), the commentary booth teams still had to talk about the race, which wasn’t, you know, racing. That makes things significantly weirder.

It’s difficult to vamp for fifteen minutes, let alone for four hours. Sometimes the commentary team devolves into little games among themselves, running jokes that aren’t really that funny but seem like they are because you aren’t sleeping, or making up parody songs themed around the 24 Hours of Le Mans and singing them on air.

I lived in Spain for a little while, and those guys really love to have fun. If you’re stuck talking about racing when all you can see is some headlights and lots of rain, why not crank up the fun with some singalong. Apparently these guys wrote new Le Mans-themed lyrics to the 1981 Ricchi e Poveri Italian language pop hit “Sarà perché ti amo.”

Leave it to the Spanish to come up with a wild idea like this one. I like it, and now it’ll be stuck in my head for the rest of the day.
