Ferrari is gearing up to address one of the most significant challenges of electric vehicles (EVs): the lack of engine noise. Recent patent filings hint at innovative solutions the Italian automaker is exploring to ensure that future EV drivers remain connected to their car’s performance audibly.
Spotted by CarBuzz, two patent applications published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on March 21 reveal Ferrari's strategies. The first patent, filed last year, details a triple-motor EV equipped with sound generators. These generators are coupled with inlets near each motor and outlets designed to channel sound into the cabin. This setup is not merely for dramatics; it aims to provide auditory cues similar to those in internal-combustion vehicles, helping drivers gauge acceleration and speed through sound.
The second patent, also filed by Ferrari and published on the same dates, describes an air-based sound generation method. This system would channel air flowing over the car into resonators, producing a distinctive sound. Ferrari suggests that air could be drawn in through the grille or an intake under the car. This innovative approach contrasts with the artificial sounds generated and played through speakers by other automakers.
Ferrari's interest in maintaining a sensory connection between the driver and the vehicle’s performance is clear from these patents. While many EVs, such as the Lucid Air Sapphire and Tesla Model S Plaid, employ tri-motor setups, Ferrari's approach to sound integration stands out.
