Flyin' Miata Will No Longer Sell You a V-8 MiataBring a Trailer

Flyin' Miata, the Colorado-based Mazda MX-5 specialist shop best known for building some of the greatest V-8-swapped Miatas on the planet, announced it will no longer be offering turn-key V-8-swapped Miatas or conversion parts for sale. Instead, it plans to continue developing emissions-compliant upgrades, like turbocharger kits, for Miatas going forward.

The shop published a statement on its website in early November citing ever-tightening emissions and government regulations as the main factors behind the decision. From Flyin' Miata:

While Flyin' Miata has an extensive history of building LSx-converted Miatas from 2008-2018 and churning out some of the most exciting Miatas to grace streets, autocrosses, tracks, and hill climbs all over the world, we have discontinued our V-8 conversion service and are no longer offering turn-key builds or conversion parts for V-8 builds. With emissions regulations becoming increasingly stringent and government entities seemingly eager to slap big fines on businesses that sell "emissions defeat devices," we have made the difficult decision to lay our V-8 program to rest.

Building supercar-beating eight-cylinder MX-5s was only a small part of Flyin' Miata's business, of course. The bulk of the shop's day-to-day involves selling maintenance parts and upgrades for things like braking and chassis components.

"We are now totally focused on designing and selling emissions-compliant upgrade parts from our standard parts catalog to suit every year of Miata," the statement reads.

If you want to add power to your Miata using Flyin' Miata products, you still can. The company sells turbo kits for NA, NB, and ND models. But if you want to drop a V-8, Flyin' Miata recommends turning to a company like V8 Roadsters which, like Flyin' Miata, has a long history swapping gigantic engines into the world's greatest sports car.

With the death of Flyin' Miata's new turn-key builds, existing V-8-swapped Flyin' Miata cars are about to become a lot more valuable. The most obvious example is the shop's own prototype, which just sold on Bring a Trailer for a staggering $99,787, the most for any Miata on the platform. We suspect it'll only go up in value from there.
