Sotheby’s Sealed is excited to present a spectacular 1964 Porsche 904 GTS, an iconic vehicle that marks the genesis of Porsche's hugely successful sports racers. This particular 904, chassis no. 904-094, was delivered new to California, where it has remained for most of its life. Initially sold to Joseph A. Richelets, owner of a Porsche/VW dealership in Long Beach, this car has a documented history of ownership and a rich racing pedigree.

In its early years, the 904 GTS competed in several SCCA events in Southern California and Arizona, achieving podium finishes at tracks like Riverside and Willow Springs. Its original color scheme of Silver Metallic over blue velour remains intact, reflecting its well-preserved condition. The car was resold in August 1964 to Otto Zipper Motors of Santa Monica and subsequently purchased by Jane O’Neall, a schoolteacher from West Los Angeles.

Reg Vernet, an amateur racer associated with O’Neall, began the 904's racing history. The car’s debut in the Production Enduro class at the Riverside Times Grand Prix in October 1964 marked the beginning of numerous successful outings. Over the following months, the 904, driven by both Vernet and Jim Adams, saw multiple victories, including two first-place finishes at Willow Springs in February 1965.

Interestingly, some sources suggest that George Lucas of Lucasfilm fame briefly owned the car early in his career. However, the car’s confirmed owners include Bruce Smith and Harry Haggard, the latter of whom had the Porsche repainted in its original silver and continued racing it until 1967. Haggard added 15,000 miles on the road before replacing the original engine with one from a 911 around 1970. Today, the car is fitted with engine number P99032, a rare Werks 2.0-liter four-cam engine, renowned for its complexity and power.

The 904 GTS has since passed through several notable owners and has participated in vintage races. Its current owner, who acquired it approximately ten years ago, has ensured the car remains in excellent condition, regularly maintained and ready to drive. Recently inspected by Cam Ingram of Road Scholars, the car retains original magnesium wheels and a racing exhaust, adding to its rarity and historical value.
