Hyundai's electric and performance divisions are on a roll. On the performance side, the N imprint has recently debuted unforgettable variants of the Elantra and Kona. The electric group has a star in the Ioniq 5, a compact electric crossover that harkens back to angular 80s hatchbacks. However, despite the promising RM20e concept, Hyundai's two most exciting divisions have never combined to produce an electric performance car.

That will change next year. Hyundai has announced an Ioniq 5 N to launch in 2023, marrying their first-ever dedicated electric product with their young performance brand. No details on the final car have been shared, but expect a quicker take on a stellar electric car that bridges the gap between crossovers and hatchbacks. Given how well Hyundai has already handled that hot crossover territory with the Kona N, the Ioniq 5 N should be among the most exciting new cars of 2023.

When the Ioniq line does get electrified, it could look a lot like the RN22e concept the brand debuted today. The new concept is based on the Ioniq 6, adding wide fenders and track-ready aerodynamics to Hyundai's streamlined new electric sedan. The new rolling laboratory is focused on bringing an engaging driving experience to electric cars, a pillar of the N brand that Hyundai delightfully refers to as "corner rascal."

The RN22e boasts 582 hp sent to all four wheels through a twin clutch torque vectoring system. The front and rear distribution of that power is adjustable by drive mode, although specific details of those splits have not been announced. Additionally, Hyundai claims the RN22e uses its regenerative braking systems to add another layer of dynamic wheel-by-wheel adjustment.

Although the ultra-aggressive RN22e is unlikely to be the exact blueprint of an Ioniq 6 N, the promise is there. Hyundai has shown through a variety of concepts that it has a strong grasp of what makes a performance electric car appealing, something it can now bring to the road. Add to that a car that looks even remotely like the N Vision 74 and that pairing of performance and electrification could be one to remember.
