Yahoo Autos Jeep Confirms Wagoneer Plug-In Hybrids, New Cherokee Coming Soon
Jeep is working on plug-in-hybrid versions of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer full-size SUVs.
A new generation of the Cherokee compact SUV, discontinued for 2023, will also launch soon.
The hybrids arrive in 2025, and the Cherokee should follow shortly thereafter.
At the debut of the new 2024 Wagoneer S EV, Jeep CEO Antonio Filosa confirmed several new models in the pipeline that will arrive within the next year. These include plug-in-hybrid 4xe versions of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer full-size SUVs, and a new generation of the Cherokee compact SUV, which was last discontinued after the 2023 model year.
Cherokee Replacement on Its Way
Filosa said that a new "mainstream" D-segment SUV model would arrive soon, and said that we "could probably guess what it will be called." We think this could only be one thing: a replacement for the Jeep Cherokee, as it has been absent from the lineup since its discontinuation and was previously one of Jeep's top-selling vehicles. This left Jeep with only the Compass as its entrant in the popular compact-SUV segment. Jeep didn't provide any photos or details on the new Cherokee, but we expect it to be, as before, slightly larger than the Compass and offered with a Trailhawk off-road trim level.
Wagoneer 4xe Plug-In Hybrids in 2025
Both of Jeep's full-size SUVs, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, will add 4xe plug-in-hybrid variants next year. Filosa referred to these models' powertrains as "range-extender" setups, leading us to believe that they will share their setup with the 2025 Ramcharger plug-in-hybrid pickup. The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer use a similar body-on-frame platform as the Ram 1500 pickup, so it seems that the Ramcharger's powertrain—which uses a 3.6-liter V-6 gasoline engine, electric motors, and a large battery pack—would work in the SUVs as well.
The Wagoneer 4xe models will join the Grand Cherokee 4xe and Wrangler 4xe in Jeep's hybrid lineup. They will be among only a few full-size SUVs offered as plug-in hybrids, as currently only the Range Rover and BMW XM—both in the luxury segment—offer PHEV setups. None of the Wagoneer's mainstream full-size-SUV competitors have plug-in options, although the Toyota Sequoia comes only as a hybrid.
