Yahoo Autos Jeep Wagoneer S Launch Edition Goes Electric With 600 HP For $71,995
Stellantis customers in North America will finally get a chance to experience an all-electric Jeep product, with the automaker finally giving us the lowdown on the all-new 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S SUV. With familiar proportions, full-time all-wheel drive, as well 600 hp and 617 lb-ft at its disposal, the new slick-sided SUV is aimed right at the heart of the current Jeep customer base.
The 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S is the first fully-electric product from the beloved brand to make its way to the United States, despite the continued success of the Jeep Avenger, which you can get as an EV if you're over in Europe.
Unlike the Avenger, which utilizes the STLA Small platform, the Wagoneer S is based on the brand’s STLA Large platform, which also underpins the upcoming Dodge Charger EV. This flexible platform has been engineered to accommodate both ICE and BEV powertrains, though Jeep has not made any mention of a gas-powered model at this time.
In its current form, the Wagoneer S will arrive with a 100 kWh battery pack stuffed into the floor, which powers a pair of 250 kW drive units at either axle. The drive unit each contains its own electric motor, requisite gearing hardware, and power electronics. The two motors work together to provide all-time all-wheel drive, but the front wheels can disconnect to improve cruising efficiency. The powertrain is good for 600 hp and 617 lb-ft of torque, which Jeep says allows for a 0-60 mph time of just 3.4 seconds. For those keeping score at home, that’s faster than our sibling publication Car and Driver was able to achieve in a Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody.
The 100 kWh battery pack is a 400-volt unit, which the automaker believes should provide customers with over 300 miles of range. Official figures should arrive closer to the on-sale date. Jeep also says that customers can expect to go from 20 percent to 80 percent charged in just 23 minutes on a DC fast charger. Every purchase will also include either a 48-amp Level 2 home charger or a set of public charging credits via the automaker’s Free2move Charge network.
The Jeep Wagoneer S is able to achieve those range figures due in part to the huge focus on aerodynamics that went into the development work. The design and engineering teams worked together from the early stages to sculpt the product, honing the shape to provide a coefficient of drag (CD) of 0.29. That's about as slippery as the original Toyota Prius, and makes this the slipperiest Jeep yet, and around 15 percent more efficient in the air than most SUVs on the road today. Jeep even hid some aero adjustments from the plain site, including a tapered center section for that desirable teardrop shape. You also won’t notice the underbody trays, reworked tire spats or aerodynamic side sills on first glance. The glorious rear spoiler, deemed the R Wing, was also revised to improve the air gap at the tail for increased range.
This new electric 4x4 is nearly identical in its wheelbase and overall length as the current two-row Grand Cherokee model, measuring 113 inches and 192.4 inches, respectively. The truck isn’t as wide as other wheelers either, with a mirror-to-mirror width of 83.6 inches. The truck employs a McPherson strut front suspension setup, while an integral link handles duties out back. The system provides the truck with about 6.9 inches of ground clearance, which falls a bit short of the Grand Cherokee’s 8.9. Furthermore, option the right suspension package on a Grand Cherokee and that figure jumps up to 10.9 inches. Based on the presence of a Wagoneer S Trailhawk concept, don’t expect to wait long before seeing a more capable Jeep EV. The Wagoneer S also provides approach, departure and breakover angles of 19.2, 23.4, and 14 degrees, respectively. That suspension is put to the ground via a set of 20-inch wheels wrapped in Falken All-Season LRR rubber.
The interior of the Wagoneer S is dominated by screens, with more than 45 inches of usable screen space strewn about. These include a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 10.25-inch integrated passenger screen, and a 12.3-inch central infotainment system running Uconnect 5 software. The interior draws design inspiration from the current Grand Cherokee, but employs a new non-leather material across the seating, console, doors and instrument panel. The suede headliner and new carpets are also made from recycled materials. Elements like chiseled cross-metal accents and black ceramic-coated aluminum touch points seek to elevate the experience. Tunes are provided by a 19-speaker McIntosh sound system, complete with a 12-inch subwoofer and 1200 watts backing it up. The vehicle will also come backed by Jeep’s suite of safety tech, including Active Driving Assist, Intersection Collision Assist, Drowsy Driver Detection, Traffic Sign Recognition, and the Surround View camera.
Stellantis says that the 2024 Jeep Wagoneer S will begin arriving at dealerships in Launch Edition spec by the fall of 2024. The early models are slated to carry a starting price of $71,995 including destination, though we have no word yet on where more entry-level models might begin. That price puts the Wagoneer S right between the existing Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer lineups, which start at$64,945 and $93,945 for the 2024 model year. That’s a fairly strong starting position for the brand’s first North American EV.
