  • Lucid has launched a line of accessories to go with its fast and powerful Air sedans.

  • Leading the charge is a wall-mounted charger that sends electricity to the car at 19.2 kW, which is tied with Porsche for the fastest home charger.

  • Price of the wall-mounted unit is $1200.

Luxury electric car maker Lucid—which only recently debuted the Lucid Air to almost universal rave reviews—has just launched an at-home wall-mounted charging unit to go with it, a must for any serious Lucidisti.

The $1200 charger can hit a peak of 19.2 kW of electric power, a rate of charge that will add 80 miles of range to the battery for every hour of charging.

“The home station will effectively double the rate at which the Lucid Air can be charged when installed at full power compared to the included charging cable,” Lucid said.

Just as the Lucid Air’s electric motors are more compact than those of its competitors, likewise the charging station is the smallest it could be and still manage those 19.2 kW of power. Lucid says it leads the industry in charging rates, though Porsche claims the exact same 19.2-kW rate for its wall-mounted charger. Lucid also claims its 24-foot-long cable is lightweight and thinner than competitors’ cables “to improve the home charging experience.” The charger is also equipped with hardware that makes it ready for the movement of power in either direction, so-called “bi-directional electric power,” so it could potentially power your house or feed electricity from the car’s battery back to the grid during peak load times. And it’s Wi-Fi-enabled for OTA (over-the-air) updates.

But that’s not all.

“This product serves as the first offering to support Lucid customers looking to integrate their vehicle into the company’s future energy ecosystem,” Lucid said. (“Ecosystem” being the current buzzword in the Silicon Valley.)

The charger is just one of several Lucid accessories announced today. You can now get your Lucid with everything from a $2000 rooftop “Air Cargo Capsule” for hauling gear on long trips, to $500 rooftop crossbars compatible with several Yakima racks that accommodate everything from bicycles to surfboards to kayaks. There is even a $250 set of Lucid all-weather floor mats.

Those prices are a drop in the pricing bucket compared to the overall cost of a Lucid Air, which ranges from $89,050 for a base model Pure to $180,650 for the Grand Touring Performance. That’s roughly in line with the Tesla Model S or Porsche Taycan sticker ranges. But do those other brands have such a cool wall-mounted charger? Well, yes they do. Tesla’s “Wall Connector” is only $400 but peaks at a mere 11.5 kW. Porsche’s sleek “Wall Charger Connector” also has a claimed 19.2 kW peak charge, but, like all Porsche accessories, stickers for a lot more money, in this case $1586.

Still, these new accessories will surely be appreciated and ordered by Lucid’s semi-fanatical EV acolytes. So plug in and then go drive somewhere.
