There are no two ways about it, car thefts in America are on the rise. In 2022, vehicle thefts were up 20 percent and last year more than a million cars were stolen across the U.S. Now, it turns that just ten models accounted for nearly a quarter of the cars stolen in America last year.

According to research from the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) here in America, ten cars accounted for 23 percent of the cars stolen in 2023. This means that we now have a handy list of vehicles to avoid if you’re hoping for a car that’s less likely to be swiped from your driveway.

So from Korean imports to homegrown American pickup trucks, here are the ten most stolen cars in America last year.

Kia Sportage

Kia’s midsize SUV was a hot target for car thieves last year and it’s the first of four cars from the Korean brand to make the list. If you want to avoid your Sportage falling to the hands of criminals, the NICB recommends tips like parking in well lit areas and leaving valuables out of sight.

Ford F-150

Reported thefts: 15,852

While cars dominate the list of most stolen vehicles in America, a few pickups did make the list as well. However, you might expect the F-150 to place a little higher on this lost based surely on the sheer quantity of them on the road.

Kia Forte

Ah! Another Kia! This time it’s the much smaller Forte that’s the eighth most stolen car in America. Other top tips the NICB has to prevent your Kia following suit include closing all the windows when you leave your car, not leaving your keys in the car and definitely not walking off with your engine still running.

Honda Civic

It wouldn’t be a list of stolen cars without a nod to the Honda civic, which is so stolen that it even earned itself a name-check in classic 2000s car theft movie “Gone In 60 Seconds.

Honda Accord

But the Civic isn’t even the most stolen Honda anymore, with the Accord now claiming that accolade after more than 20,000 of them were swiped in America last year. If your car is ever stolen, the NICB says it’s essential to report the theft to your insurer and law enforcement as soon as possible.

Kia Soul

The Kia Soul was a popular target for car thieves in America last year, becoming the fifth most stolen car in the country. If your Kia is stolen, though, hope isn’t lost as the NCIB reports that 34 percent of recovered stolen vehicles are found on the same day as the theft, and 45 percent are recovered within two days.

The second pickup truck to make it onto the list of America’s most stolen vehicles is the Silverado from Chevrolet. The Silverado used to be the country’s most stolen vehicle, until two Korean car manufacturers started breaking all its records.

Kia Optima

The first model in the top three is our fourth and final Kia: the Optima. With more than 30,000 of these cars stolen cross America last year, owners can thank TikTok for the rapid rise in thefts of these cars. Well, that and the fact that many still don’t even have immobilizers installed.

Hyundai Sonata

Reported thefts: 42,813

With a whopping 12,000 more thefts than the Optima, the Hyundai Sonata is America’s second most-stolen car. The slick sedan from Hyundai falls victim to similar shortcomings to the optima, namely a lack of security tech and a social media trend that tough hundreds how to carry out grand theft auto.

Hyundai Elantra

Reported thefts: 48,445

According to the NICB, the Hyundai Elantra is officially the most stolen car in America with more than more than three times as many thefts reported than the Kia Sportage in 10th place. Things have gotten so bad for some Hyundai owners that even insurance companies on’t cover their most crime-susceptible models.
