Power Profile: Subaru Forester

Subaru has announced changes for the 2017 Forester, and the highlights include updated styling with new aluminum wheel choices, measures taken to quiet the interior, upgraded driver-assistance technology, new safety and convenience features, and improved fuel economy. The turbocharged models also now feature the Active Torque Vectoring system from the racy WRX and WRX STI models.

These changes may help improve the Forester’s ranking in the annual J.D. Power U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study.SM In that study, the Forester already performed well in terms of its overall appeal, ranking third among 12 Compact SUVs.

Who Buys the Subaru Forester?
An equal number of men and women choose the Subaru Forester, according to J.D. Power research data, but this compact SUV’s owners are a little older than the segment average (58 years vs. 56). Forester owners also enjoy higher median household incomes, at $96,042, compared with $90,130.

As would be expected, just 37% of Forester owners agree somewhat or mostly that they prefer to buy a vehicle from a U.S. company, compared with 60% for the Compact SUV segment. Forester owners seek reliability in a new SUV, with 74% agreeing mostly that this is their first consideration when choosing a vehicle, compared with the segment average of 63%.

Forester owners are also more willing to pay extra for a vehicle that is environmentally friendly (67% vs. 55%) and which has the latest safety features (83% vs. 79%). Additionally, Forester owners are less concerned about driving a vehicle that stands out from a crowd, as just 49% agree that this is a preference, compared with 65% of all Compact SUV owners.

Only 49% of Forester owners agree that friends and family think of them as a person who knows a great deal about autos, whereas 54% of collective Compact SUV owners feel that way.

What Do Owners Most Like about the Forester?
Based on the results of the 2015 U.S. APEAL Study, and according to the people who own one, the five most appealing attributes of the Subaru Forester are (in descending order) visibility and safety, driving dynamics, exterior styling, engine/transmission, and seats.
