Rivian ‘R1X’ Trademark Hints at Flagship TruckRivian

A U.S. trademark application filed by Rivian for the ‘R1X’ name hints at what could be a flagship performance off-road vehicle.

The patent was filed in March 2021 and approved in October 2023, though it only recently came to light when users on the Rivian Owners Forum unearthed it last week. The automaker has six months from the date of the approval to either file a Statement of Use or a Request for Extension of Time.

It has been a busy couple of weeks for automaker Rivian. Early in March, it revealed the R2 and R3/R3X models. The R2 is a scaled-down and less expensive version of the R1S. The R3 is smaller still and gives off strong vintage VW Golf GTI vibes. The R3X is the performance variant of the R3 and will offer increased abilities both on and off-road. So, it stands to reason that if Rivian were to bring an R1X to market, it would be the performance version of the larger R1T and R1S models.

The current top specification R1S and R1T models are the Quad Motor variants that pack 835 horsepower and 908 pound-feet of torque. That is enough power to get them to 60 mph in about 3 seconds. An R1X model would likely boast more than 1,000 horsepower. That would put it on par with the tri-motor Hummer EV.

Of course, this trademark does not guarantee that a flagship Rivian R1X model will be forthcoming. However, for fans of the brand who are looking for something that can take on everything from a Tesla Model S Plaid to a Hummer EV, the prospect of an R1X is certainly exciting.
