Both the 2024 Land Rover Defender 130 Outbound and the 2024 Lexus GX550 Overtrail+ ditch third-row seats and add big tires and off-road attitude. But which one is the real deal out on the trail?

We took the Land Rover Defender 130 Outbound and Lexus GX550 Overtrail+ to Drummond Island for a real off-road reckoning.

The Defender's height-adjustable air suspension was a boon out in the woods.

Drummond Island is not a curated off-road theme park. Obstacles here can have real consequences, as we found.

The Drummond ORV Difficulty Map includes lots of difficulty.

The GX550's solid rear axle endowed it with impressive suspension articulation—which the Defender didn't really require.

The 130 Outbound's exterior cargo bin looks very Camel Trophy, but we never quite figured out why we'd need it.

Even with an extra 6.8 inches of wheelbase compared to the Lexus, the Defender's breakover angle was sufficient to clear this ledge.

The Outbound's ladder begs for a roof tent to justify its existence.

The Defender's side-hinged rear cargo door didn't win many fans.

The Defender's interior decor was evidently inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe.
