The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GLA35 is a small SUV that's incapable of taking a breather. This 302-hp hot hatch on stilts offers solid performance and an attractive-for-an-AMG base price, but you have to be okay with a car that starts out stiff and stays that way.

The Mercedes-AMG GLA35 is all about having a good time, so don't expect it to relax.

Its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.

In our testing, this all-wheel-drive performance SUV hit 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and dispatched the quarter-mile run in 13.4 seconds at 102 mph.

The GLA35 takes about as long to stop from 70 mph (152 feet) and 100 mph (304 feet) as a Nissan Z NISMO.

Despite this consistent power delivery, we still managed to achieve 30 mpg on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test loop.

The GLA35's eight-speed dual-clutch automatic works great at full clip, but it can be a little clumsy around town or when calling up the lowest available gear.

There's a new 48-volt hybrid-assist system under the hood, but it functions mostly as a stop-start extender.

Even though adaptive dampers are standard, the GLA35's suspension is permanently stiff, which is great in the twisties but less so everywhere else.

Watch those options: The GLA35 starts at $57,600, but our test car ballooned to nearly $73,000 when all its baubles were tacked on.
