Yahoo Autos Mazda Recalls 10,000 2024 CX-90 Hybrids for Driver-Assistance Issue
Mazda is recalling 9914 of its 2024 CX-90 Hybrid SUVs due to a potential fault with the forward collision warning system.
According to documents associated with the recall, the brakes may activate suddenly.
The problem occurs at relatively low driving speeds between 10-15 mph because the smart brake system (SBS) falsely detects objects in the vehicle's path.
Mazda is recalling 9914 CX-90 Hybrids due to a potential fault with the vehicle's forward collision warning system. All 9914 cars included in the recall are 2024 models. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the CX-90's brakes may activate suddenly, increasing the risk of a crash.
The problem occurs at relatively low driving speeds between 10 and 15 mph when the smart brake system (SBS) falsely detects objects in the vehicle's path and brakes to avoid impact with the phantom objects. The system is particularly prone to mistaking reflections or large metal objects on the side of the road as approaching objects, the documents say. According to NHTSA, the brake lights will illuminate as normal, though the sudden braking may still increase the risk of a crash.
Affected owners will be notified by mail and instructed to bring their CX-90 to their local dealership. Dealers will reprogram the vehicle control module (VCM) with updated software, free of charge to the owner. As the updated software should resolve the issue, Mazda says it doesn't expect any other repairs to be necessary.
Dealers were to have been notified earlier in May, while owner notification letters are expected to be mailed before July 17. Owners concerned their vehicle may be involved in the recall can also check the NHTSA recalls website to see if their vehicle is affected.
