A rare and exquisitely restored 1965 Ferrari 275 GTS is set to be the highlight of Monaco Car Auctions’ Ferrari-exclusive L’Astarossa sale on June 8. This prestigious event, held at the Grimaldi Forum, will feature the iconic car, expected to sell for an estimated $1.6 million to $2 million.
Ferrari introduced the 275 GTS at the 1964 Paris Motor Show alongside the better-known 275 GTB. While over 800 units of the GTB were produced, only 200 examples of the GTS were built between late 1964 and early 1966, making it a coveted collector's item. The 275 GTS featured a 3.3-liter V-12 engine designed by Colombo, producing 260 horsepower and achieving a top speed of 150 mph.
The vehicle on offer, the 29th produced, was initially delivered new to Spain, where it has mostly remained. It underwent a comprehensive restoration in 2008 by GPS Classic in Italy, which restored the car to its original condition, featuring the original Blu Chiaro exterior and Pelle Blu interior. This restoration included retaining the matching numbers and original engine, earning the car Ferrari Classiche certification and extensive documentation from U.K. Ferrari specialist DK Engineering.
Displayed at the 2009 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, the car now shows 3,169 kilometers (approximately 1,969 miles) on its odometer. The meticulous restoration and careful maintenance by its devoted steward have preserved this vehicle as a significant piece of Ferrari history.
Hand-built in Maranello, the 1965 Ferrari 275 GTS exemplifies the peak of 1960s automotive design, with its unique blend of engineering and aesthetic excellence. Its independent rear suspension, rear-mounted five-speed gearbox, and Pininfarina-designed body, built by Pininfarina itself, underscore its status as a masterpiece.
The L’Astarossa sale will draw Ferrari enthusiasts and collectors from around the world, eager to witness and potentially acquire this extraordinary automobile. As one of only 200 ever made, this Ferrari 275 GTS stands as a testament to the marque’s legacy of innovation and artistry.
