The i5 eDrive40 serves as BMW's entry point into its electric 5-series lineup. While it lacks the sheer force of its more powerful M60 counterpart, the eDrive40's rear-wheel-drive, single-motor layout is still mighty perky.
The 2024 BMW i5 eDrive40 starts at $67,795.
Motive force comes from a single electric motor mounted on the rear axle.
A dual-motor, all-wheel-drive xDrive40 trim will arrive for the 2025 model year, should the lack of AWD be a deal-breaker for you.
Output is a sufficient 335 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.
Flipping the Sport Boost paddle or engaging launch control gets you additional bursts of torque, which rises to 317 pound-feet.
The EPA estimates that the i5 eDrive40 will run 270 miles per charge with the 21-inch wheels, or 295 with the base 19s.
As with BMW's other recent i models, the i5 looks nearly identical to the gas-powered 5-series models.
Thankfully, it's plenty zippy, reaching 60 in 5.1 seconds in our testing.
The i5 eDrive40 is $8900 more than a base gas-powered 530i.
