The last Ford Ranger to grace the North American market was a rehashed version of an already-old truck. But the 2024 Ranger feels every bit as new as it is. With major upgrades to the cabin and drivability, the Ranger feels far better equipped to compete against recently revised offerings from Chevy and Toyota.
Now looking like a smaller F-150, the 2024 Ranger is 2.2 inches wider and roughly three inches taller than the truck it replaces.
A four-door crew cab paired with a five-foot bed is the only combination offered, as the extended cab and the six-foot box have been axed.
Its 128.7-inch wheelbase is 1.9 inches longer than before, but the overall vehicle length is a hair shorter, thanks to stubbier front and rear overhangs.
Ranger 4x2 and 4x4 models now share the same overall height and are virtually indistinguishable, apart from badging.
An EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder that makes 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque is the only engine currently offered, but an EcoBoost twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6 making 315 horses and 400 pound-feet joins the fray in a few months.
The bed now has a damped tailgate that's supplemented with a torsion spring for easier closing, but the big trick is the 48.2-inch spacing between the inner fenders that allows plywood sheets to lay flat on the floor.
