A remarkably preserved 1991 Jaguar XJR-15, showing just 78 miles, is now available for private sale through RM Sotheby's. This particular vehicle is one of only 27 road-legal versions of the XJR-15 ever produced, making it an exceptionally rare find for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
The Jaguar XJR-15 is a street-legal counterpart to the legendary Jaguar XJR-9, which won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1988 and 1990. Built by JaguarSport, a partnership between Jaguar and Tom Walkinshaw Racing, the XJR-15 was designed to bring the exhilarating experience of Le Mans racing to the public. The car's development was spearheaded by Jim Router and Dave Fullerton, with the body designed by Peter Stevens, who also designed the iconic McLaren F1.
This groundbreaking supercar was the first production vehicle to feature a body constructed entirely of a carbon fiber and Kevlar composite. The XJR-15 is powered by a heavily tuned 6.0-liter V12 engine, producing 450 horsepower, and features a central monocoque chassis similar to that of the Le Mans-winning XJR-9. Weighing approximately 2,300 pounds, the XJR-15 boasts a power-to-weight ratio that surpassed all other supercars of its era.
Chassis number 008 is one of the 27 XJR-15s built for road use, equipped with a five-speed transaxle instead of the six-speed Le Mans gearbox used in the track-only versions. This example was sold new to respected Japanese collector Miura Shoji and remained in pristine condition under his care. In 2018, the car was imported to the United States and underwent a full fluid change and mechanical checkup by Fast Cars Limited in Redondo Beach, California. The current owner acquired the car in 2022 and had it serviced again in July 2023, ensuring it remains in top condition.
The XJR-15's exterior, with its carbon weave structure visible through the paint and clear engine cover, exudes a sense of performance and craftsmanship. The interior features leather racing seats, hardwired headsets for high-speed conversations, and a bare carbon fiber tub that highlights the car's racing pedigree. The gauges and Nardi racing steering wheel are framed by the same carbon fiber material, emphasizing the vehicle's unique and raw aesthetic.
